What is in a portrait photographer’s camera bag?

What is in your camera bag? I have been asked this on a couple of occasions…let’s take a look. Firstly, and maybe the most important is the kind of bag I use. I have had many compliments on my camera bags over the years, they are beautiful! I have been an avid user of Kelly Moore camera bags since the early years. Stumbling on their company at the WPPI tradeshow was the best thing ever and I have been loyal for probably 15 years now. Sticking with the same bag has never been my thing, just the same brand, so I have used many different types of Kelly Moore bags and usually get a new one every other Christmas, sort of a gift to myself or from family. Most of my bags have been shoulder bags, but I am considering a backpack for this next round. Maybe this one they call The Kelly OR The Tourist but it might be a little small. More research is definitely needed. What do you think? The bag I have now is not currently available on their site, but it is something like the bag in the photo below, The Daniela, but in black leather. They really do hold up so well under daily use, they honestly last longer than my purses.

Now for what’s in my bag:

Camera Body: I have a Canon R6, I started with Canon, continue to use Canon, and will finish with Canon. I trust it, I love it, and I know it so well, my camera body is like another limb of my body. I switched to mirrorless in 2022 and have been learning and loving this system so much. My lenses have not been converted yet, I continue to use an adaptor for now.

Flash: A Canon Speedlite is always in my bag, mostly for a little bit of fill light for events or on-location portrait sessions. You never know when your client is going to insist on a location and the lighting is terrible, you have to be prepared. I almost never use an on-camera flash as my main light source.

Lenses: 28-70 2.8, 70-200mm, 50mm 1.2, 100mm macro, 16-35mm. These really do cover all the bases for me. I love each and every one for different reasons. Maybe I will do a post about just lense and why I love each with sample images at some point, that would be fun!

Extras: Canon Batteries, AA batteries for the Speedlite, water-tight cases for my SD cards, SD cards, Godox Triggers for my off-camera flashes, clothing clips, oil absorbing sheets for skin, wipes, saline nose wipes, cash for valet tips, noisemakers for toddlers and kiddos, lollipops for kiddos.

Personal Items: Chaptick, Sunscreen, Tampons, Gum/mints, Hair Tie
